Are there a lot of job opportunities for dental hygienists ?
No Experience Necessary
Question by : Are there a lot of job opportunities for dental hygienists ?
I’m currently in school for nursing, the only class that is holding me back from starting my clinicals is Anatomy. It’s too much information for me to grasp at once and I honestly don’t have much interest in it, with all my personal problems going on in my life, I find it hard to focus and study. I failed anatomy last semester and I’m now retaking it but feeling extremely discouraged and I’m also tempted to just drop it. I would really love to be an RN but I’m not sure if it’s going to work out as planned. I’m interested in becoming a dental hygienist but I’m concerned about the job opportunities. Are there a lot, is the pay good? Would you recommend becoming a dental hygienist?

Anatomy is very important concept to grasp. It applies to patho. People who struggle in anatomy often struggle in patho. You have to understand the body to understand patho and you probably will struggle in nursing classes if you can’t handle anatomy at this point due to any number of reasons. I know this is coming off cold, but it’s the truth. I don’t like sugarcoating things.
What you should do is to go talk to a counselor and see if you can get study tips. Also see if you can find a method that works for you. One option is to drop down to a lower anatomy and then try the higher anatomy class at a later date. What about taking anatomy by itself over the summer? It’ll be a rushed class but if it’s your only class, that may help. Does listening to recorded lectures work better (always tape with permission)? Do you have a good teacher? Use Ratemyprofessor to make sure you have a good teacher.
The issue with dental hygienists is that you have to move to where there are jobs. Outside of a dental hygienist school, there’s limited job offers but elsewhere in the country there are a bunch of offers. I know at my school, the nursing program and dental hygienist share the same anatomy class. The pay is less than an RN usually. I think the average is about 18 dollars an hour here and I live in the midwest so it’s not bad. RNs usually make between 23-25 starting out.
