Question by mommy’s princess due 8.8.09!: Becoming a Dental Hygienist?
I want to do a 2 year program to become a Dental Hygienist but I hear it’s hard to get accepted. For example, if 300 people apply only 30 get in. What types of things are colleges looking for when accepting students? What things will keep me from getting accepted and what will better my chances?
I’m in Indiana and I want to go to IUPUI

Obviously good grades and well rounded academia are important but depending on the school, there could be anything from a straight lottery system for “qualified applicants” to a point based system where applicants are graded based on academics, the entrance interview, prior dental experience, and a written essay. Here in Cen Cal there are both types of schools. You really should research the schools in your area and ask the admissions department for a comprehensive list of requirements to gain entrance to their institution. Maybe a hygienist can add to this answer or give more specific info…

I know in WI, the Gateway/ MATC program (a combination of Gateway Technical College with Milwaukee Area Technical College) requires ALL of the gen-eds and prerequisite classes to be completed before you can even be considered for acceptance into the program. Also, once a person is accepted into the program, the student must not have any grade lower than a C to continue. One D and you are out of there. So, high academic standards are often required. You don’t have to be a 4.0 grade point average, but they don’t want to see a bunch of Cs and Ds either with your prerequisite classes. I know this because I checked into it when I was attending Gateway for dental assisting. I hope this helps.
