Dental Assistant or Ultrasound Tech?
No Experience Necessary
Question by : Dental Assistant or Ultrasound Tech?
I’m going back to school, and these two choice I have the most interest in. I prefer the Dental field, but really wouldn’t mind either one. I like dental assisting since school won’t be as long, and I would graduate and have a job before I ever finish school for ultrasound. Not really sure about the pay, just want opinions, thanks.

There is no formal education requirements for becoming a Dental Assistant – many are trained on the job. This is probably why they don’t get paid very much (expect between $ 11-15/hour). You should also know that dental assistants have no room for advancement in their field. Many people work in this field temporarily while they are in school for something else, or while they wait to enter a program like Dental Hygiene.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ultrasound) does require formal training from an accredited program (see link). They make on average $ 63k/yr. Sure it takes a little longer, but that’s because it’s a career, not a job. As a side note, Sonographers do all kinds of scans, not just babies, contrary to popular belief. So make sure you do your research first before you decide on a career you know nothing about.
