Dental Hygienists: Job Market?
No Experience Necessary
Question by L: Dental Hygienists: Job Market?
I am interested in pursuing a degree in dental hygiene. I am curious to know the job market of dental hygienists in the San Fancisco Bay Area (level of competition for jobs, is it easy to get hired?). Also curious what schedules are available (part-time, M-F 8-5, etc.).

I’m not sure about the job market for dental hygienists these days, but it used to be that DHs may work a couple part-time jobs in the field though perhaps withOut job benefits such as health insurance or a 401k plan.
Regarding schooling, please forgo those private overpriced for-profit tech schools such as ‘pima medical institute’, ‘sanford brown’, ‘everest’, ‘devry’ or such and instead consider the more Affordable community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry.
The dental hygiene curriculum is supposed to be quite rigorous and one should be strong in the sciences (biology, chemistry, microbiology, anatomy and physiology) and different DH programs may have slightly different prereq courses and requirements so please check with the school(s) Before taking certain classes as NOT all may transfer. DH students also learn about head and neck anatomy.
For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search.
This site is supposed to have accredited programs in DH: http://www.adha.org and can look under “education and careers” or such.
For US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ
Before actually taking prerequisites, it’s best to look at some dental textbooks such as the ones at the local community college that offers the program and/or the local dental/medical school library. Some patients may have severe dental disease, and it may help to find out if one may be able to handle that type of situation or not
