Question by Vee: How do I become a Dental Hygienist?
I’ve been stressing for months about choosing a major. And finally, I’ve decided to become a Dental Hygienist, through a lot of internet searching I’ve grown very bewildered in how to accomplish this. I’m currently going to community college, can I become a RDH (Registered Dental Hygienist) with an associate in Science from Community College or do I have to go to some kind of trade school? And what happens afterwards? Very confused :(

You can get the AS Degree from a community college. You have to pass the state board examination before you are licensed. You need to visit a counselor at the community college who can tell you all the details.

Well you wont get in right away. Plan on waiting years to get in. took me 3 years to get into a program.
You have to go to either a local community college that offers hygiene or to a private college or a 4 year college that offers it. I suggest looking up programs by state on http://www.ada.org

Go to yahoo search engine and type in “ada.org dental hygiene programs by state”.

Apply to all the colleges that you can travel to. Read the requirements online on each college website. All of them require several prereqs like algebra or higher math, college english, chemistry with a lab, anatomy and physiology 1 and 2, biology, microbiology etc BEFORE you can even apply to the program. Also some require “observation hours” at a local dental office. Where you watch a hygienist for so many hours and get them to sign a letter stating you observed.
