Dental Hygiene is a very good career choice. Its a fast program as well. You only work 3-4 days a week and can work at 2 offices. Depending on where you live the salary can range from 65k-90k a year

Dental assistant, which is what I am, is enough to live on, but it does not pay as well as a hygienist. A person can be trained off the street for assisting, although most dentists won’t do that anymore. An accredited dental assistant program takes one year to complete, and hygiene is a two year program.

Hygiene pays very well, and might be a good choice for you if you want to make good money and can put in two years of schooling. You should decide ahead of time though, because hygiene classes are NOT the same as assistant classes. There is alot more anatomy and study of nerves in hygiene, because hygienists have to learn how to give anesthetics. So, it all depends on what you want to do. Hygiene, to me personally, seems like a boring job, as the person basically cleans teeth all day, whereas an assistant can do a variety of functions including front desk work, managerial, 4 handed dentistry (this is working directly with the dentist on whatever he or she is working on), taking x-rays, and getting patients ready. To me assisting is much more interesting, even if the pay is not as good. I hope this helps.

Dental Hygiene is a good career, but Dental Assistant, or Dental Nurse as we are now called is great too, I started off dental nursing in 1999 and completed a years training course, at that time any one could start a job as a dental nurse and not have to be qualified, however from 31st July 08 the GDC (General Dental Council) now require all dental nurses to be qualified and registered.

There is also post certificate qualifications you can do to further your career as a dental nurse, i have recently passed my Oral Health Educators Exam, and im about to undertake further study for more qualifications.

I currently work as an Oral Health Educator, going around schools giving lessons and other involvement with the general public

I would say it would be a good idea to see if you can get some work experience within a dental practice seeing what the Hygienist does and the role of the Dental Nurse.

I also work as a Dental Nurse Advisor, triaging and dealing with out of hours dental emergencies.

There are many roads you can take a dental career but def first of all get into a practice and see what goes on within the surgery.
