I’m a dentist.

For what it’s worth….

If I had to choose between hiring a male hygienist and a female hygienist, assuming all other things were equal, I’d go with the female hygienist.

Unfortunately, a dental practice is much more of a customer-service oriented business than, say, a medical practice. As such, we want to hire employees that make patients comfortable. Part of that means hiring people who will meet patients’ expectations. Most patients expect female hygienists. As a dentist, I would imagine that some patients would be a little put-off by a male hygienist. It’s a wrinkle I just wouldn’t want to add to my practice.

Now, I will gladly admit to the fact that I have worked with female hygienists who were not well-liked by the practice’s patients–i.e. I’d hear some patients accuse a certain female hygienist of being “rough” or “rude”. I would imagine, though, that patients would more readily make such accusations about a male hygienist.

But that’s just me. Of course, there may be a lot of other dentists like me.

Look, If thats what you want to do, then go for it! I have seen male hygienists and thats perfectly normal.
At this time, there is no shame or discrimination in men doing the ‘womens’ jobs and women doing the ‘mens’ jobs!

Go for it! and Good luck!

It is hard for any hygienist to find a job right now depending on where you live. With the recession people stop going to the dentist because many think it is an extra expense not a necessity. Being a male has nothing to do with your ability to get a job as a hygienist. Hygiene is just like how nursing used to be. That for some reason everyone thinks it is a woman’s job. So less men are in hygiene.
