Question by ****: Dental Hygienist INFORMATION, please help!?
I need some information about becoming a dental hygienist. I am mainly interested in these questions:

I have a B.S. in psychology, do I need a degree in a science related field in order to GET a job as a dental hygienist?

Is passing the state exam enough to get hired as a DH?

What exactly are dentist’s looking for when they hire a DH?

What do I need to do to get a job after I finish DH schooling?

Is it hard to be accepted in the DH program?

How hard is the schooling, state tests, etc?

Should I have dental experience (assisting, receptionist) in a dental office?

I am mainly concerned about what credential I will need in order to be considered for a job as a DH. I don’t want to finish school and be out of a job. I’ve already been through this after graduating from college :)

Any inforation will be helpful, thanks!

Answer by Chensona, RDA
To make is easier, I have copied ad pasted your questions and will answer them individually:

I have a B.S. in psychology, do I need a degree in a science related field in order to GET a job as a dental hygienist? No – any BS will work, but you must have specific courses prior to enrolling in a hygiene program. Check with the school you want to attend for the required pre-reqs.

Is passing the state exam enough to get hired as a DH? Almost… you also must have a likable personality, be professional in attire, attitude, presentation, care about patients, and be willing to be a team player in a dental office.

What exactly are dentist’s looking for when they hire a DH? A professional who really cares about BOTH the patients and the business, team player (helps others), never says “that’s not my job”, works quickly with excellent results, detailed in the dental procedures, clean, neat, personable with patients, and can stay on schedule.

What do I need to do to get a job after I finish DH schooling? Begin interviewing. Most newspapers have listings in the employment section. Also, dentaljobs.com dentalwaorkers.com and other on-line employment sections help connect you with potential employers.

Is it hard to be accepted in the DH program? Hard – not exactly, but it is competitive. They usually enroll based upon a point system. GPA earns points, volunteering in a dental office, previous work as a dental assistant, reference letter from a dentist or hygienist saying you would be good at it, and other items. Since enrollment is limited, they choose the ones they feel will be best fitted for the profession.

How hard is the schooling, state tests, etc? Hard. If you study study study, then you should do fine.

Should I have dental experience (assisting, receptionist) in a dental office? It helps – in applying for school, learning how the office functions as a team, and with terminology. The more exposure you have, the better off you will be.

Good Luck!

Question by Olivia: HELP!!! how to become a Certified Dental Assistant?
So i went to a local dental assisting school and completed 12 weeks of hands on lab and book work. I graduated from this school and got my “diploma” and am CPR certified, but I am left feeling very confused. I know there is another step i have to take to be certified, or a “CDA” through DANB, but i haven’t been able to reach my instructor. I want to start putting out my resumes but need help with the next step. I went on the DANB website but this just confused me further. Any advice will help! Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by imadentist
Oliva – I am a dentist who has practice 14 years…here is my advice.

Call your state dental board. They will be able to help you out. Sure you might get put on hold – or get ahold of someone who isn’t real interested…but if you persist…you will get your answers.

Most states have their state dental board online…go there first to look for contact numbers.

Good luck!

Question by : HELP! How to become a dental assistant?
I am 17 years old (18 in one month)
I have my high school diploma and I live in North Carolina.

To become a dental assistant do I..

Do I go into my local dentistry and ask?
(What would I say exactly?)

Would I have to attend any classes, or just take a test? (Community college)
If I do have to attend any classes how many and how long would it take?

Thanks so much!

Best answer:

Answer by AuntKatie
What you need to do can vary, depending on where you live or where you want to work. You may need to get an associate’s degree, and you will probably have to be licensed by the state where you want to work. Check here.

Question by SASSYCHICK!: HELP?? Dental assistant program?
I will be starting a Dental assistant soon only problem is this program doesn’t offer x-ray training so I was wondering does any one know of a school/class I could go to for X-ray certification in the New York City Area

Best answer:

Answer by sincity usa
First of all if your going to go to a dental assisting program, make sure they offer x-ray training as part of the course. That just does not sound right to me at all. 40% of what you do is x-rays, and any test you take will have an x-ray test. Is this program accredited by the A.D.A? If not i would find another program. I went to the college of southern Nevada’s dental assisting program that is accredited by the a.d.a. The class list is as follows dental intro, dental heath, Integrated science (head and neck anatomy), radiology, chairside, english 101, dental materials, practice management, and a 300 hour internship. So if your program is not close to this it might not be worth it.

Question by *bee*: choosing a school for dental assisting? private colleges? HELP!?
I live in southern california, I have tried community college and its extremely hard to get the classes I need.

There are three schools I have looked into, these are close to me as i do not want to have to drive far:
1.) American Career College (ontario, CA)
2.) Carington College (pomona, CA)
3.) Everest (ontario, CA)

American career college is the least expensive at 17,000 for the whole program
Everest is the most expensive at 20 some thousand

PLEASE i need advice on these schools if you went there or know anyone that went there?
OR if your currently a dental assistant
what should be some questions that i should be asking these schools? what is most important things to know when going to a private college such as these?

I feel like im not getting all the information i need, and if im gonna be having to pay this much and have to take out a loan i want to KNOW THAT I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE

whats the difference between
certificate or diploma?
what about accreditation??

advice??? anything helps as i dont know any people in the career that i can ask

Best answer:

Answer by Almost Marathe
You are seriously considering spending $ 17,000 to learn how to be a dental assistant?????

OMG – that’s crazy!

Don’t you have some sort of health professions school out there in CA that you can attend, for less money? Or a different community college than the one you tried? I’ve never heard of tuition like that in my life! Are you sure it’s not 17 HUNDRED?

If you’re going to spend any kind of real money, get into dental hygiene. You will never recoup that kind of tuition as an assistant. Those figures are nuts.

E-mail me and send me links to these web sites, if you have them. Something’s gotta be wrong here.

A friend of mine wants to take either Pharmacy Technician or Dental assistant class but she’s still undecided. She’s not going to a higher level (e.g. becoming a pharmacist or dentist); therefore, she wants to know which career pays higher and will be stable in the future. Advices are greatly appreciated, thanks :)

Question by Heather: resume help for dental assistant?
Need help with the objective on my resume for dental assistant?

Best answer:

Answer by The
Just speak about how you look to epxand your knowledge and skills in the dental field.

Its funny I ran across this question. I recently just landed a job as a Medical Assistant and all of my resumes were all over the place and wasn’t much professional. Only thing that was landing me interviews was my certificate…. because I know they were just throwing my resumes out.

However, literally like 3 weeks ago I was researching for a cheap resume building services. Where they would create a resume for me (professionally) and I found one on fiverr who does it for $ 5 and they mailed me 10 additional physical copies for free.

Jobs started calling me almost everyday, since I been sending in my professional resume that the company on fiverr made for me. So it does make a difference and most employers does look at professionalism.

http://fiverr.com/thewriteway119/build-a-professional-resume-and-cover-letter

That’s the link to it. Sorry for the long answer, just felt the need to inforn you. However for the nost part just talk about goals in your objective.

Question by Legend: Dental Hygienist Help Needed?
I am interested in becoming a dental hygienist but I am a little hesitant because I am a male and have never seen a guy hygienist before. Does anyone here know a male hygienist or have any advice for me lol?

Best answer:

Answer by Steph
It is true most dental hygienists are females, but why should that stop you? Dental Hygiene is a GREAT profession and they make excellent money! They are highly educated and trained to do their job very well. It’s challenging schooling, but of course not impossible. I would personally love being worked on by a cute male hygienist, as I’m sure most other females would!
