Question by Saagar: Navy hospital corman dental assistants? ?
Have a few questions. I’d prefer peoPle who have already done the program

Best answer:

Answer by TRANT
Oct. 1, 2007 had been set as the date to merge the dental technician rating into the hospital corpsman field rating.

Combining the fields shifts some 2,800 dental technicians into the more than 23,000-strong hospital corpsmen field, according to Navy Bureau of Medicine Force Master Chief Petty Officer Jackie DiRosa.

With the merger comes new training, DiRosa said, providing sailors with the two ratings’ basic skills and knowledge.

Now, hospital corpsmen and dental technicians learn the manuals for each others’ jobs from recruits through petty officers first class. Senior enlisted ranks have additional Web-based training.

Active-duty and full-time support personnel have until July 30 to complete the training; those in the Reserves have until July 30, 2007.

“Dental technicians are going to have the most to learn,” DiRosa said. “But this training is going to bridge the gap between the two ratings … give them the foundational skills of being a hospital corpsmen. They’ll have to show they are proficient in basic lifesaving skills.”

DiRosa said the dental assistant job still will be there; it’s just now one of 46 specialties within the hospital corpsman field.

To make a smooth transition, she said, training at the Navy’s schools had to be revamped. The new 14-week hospital corpsman “A” school with a dental assistant training package kicked off at Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill., in early August. A new six-week dental school for those who wish to specialize in the field was designed; the first class should start in November, DiRosa said, adding the Navy will train about 250 dental-assistant corpsmen each year. Training for Navy dental technicians was held at a joint military school at Shepherd Air Force Base, Texas.

Seaman April Rogers, a dental technician at U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, said the merger means “it will be easier for current dental techs to transfer to other specialties — say biomedical — that would have been a little more challenging under the current system. … I will still be working as a dental tech but will have more exposure to medical training.”

Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephanie Santiago, a laboratory technician at the hospital, said the change gives more options but also will make getting promoted more difficult.

“The merger will allow more diversity for new corpsmen coming into the career field,” she said. “As HMs, we are already required to have dental training and will be learning more to be competitive for advancement. … The merger will probably be hardest on the current dental technicians who will be required to train more in depth on medical procedures. Regardless, it will be more difficult competitively.”

DiRosa said corpsmen who study and meet their requirements will be competitive and have equal opportunities for promotion. “It’s a win-win overall,” she said.

“The Navy and Marine Corps benefit because we will now have greater flexibility and utilization of all our manpower assigned to the Marine Corps. … This increases our pool of available deployable corpsmen.”

Question by C M: How long is the Dental Hygienist program in the Navy Reserves and will the training qualify me for a civilian
job? or would i need to go to a Dental hygienist school once out?

Best answer:

Answer by Mrsjvb
no, you would still need to be state certified. depending on the state, they may only require you to take the test, or they may make you get the training as well.

There are things you will be permitted to do as an HM that any civilian would not be permitted to do.

Question by Jasmine: what will happen to you at Navy basic training?
I just watched a video on Youtube & they do all your dental inspections when you get there. Do they send you home of you have like, a cavity or something like that? How extreme is it?

Best answer:

Answer by Susan
I know in the Army they didn’t send anyone home if they had a cavity, but if your wisdom teeth were showing in the x-ray they made you get them pulled. Can you say OWWW?

Question by Victoria M: What does it take to become a Dental Hygienist in the US Navy?
I want to become a Dental Hygienist, but I’m not sure if I should complete the training before or after enlisting in the Navy. Will I still earn a GI Bill if I get an associate degree before enlisting?

Best answer:

Answer by whosaidthat?
yes no matter what you have, degree wise, you will still get the GI Bill from the military. you should talk to a recruiter about which would be your best option. don’t let them talk you into joining too early. tell them what you want to accomplish, and which route would be best. if you feel like they’re giving you BS just to get you in, walk away, and find a new recruiter to talk to. sometimes they’re very eager to get their numbers in, and will tell you anything. I do want to say that although there are some that will lie to you don’t let it turn you off the military, keep researching till you find the best situation for you. Good luck with your career.

Answer by Horatio
I found the following information in the Dentist Training Manual for Navy dentists. You can view it at the source link I posted below.

ROUTINE DENTAL CARE.—This treatment includes all the medical, surgical, and restorative treatment of oral disease, injuries, and deficiencies that come within the field of dentistry as commonly practiced by the dental profession. This service is preventive and corrective and includes:
- Dental examinations and advice on dental health.
- Restoration of lost tooth structure.
- Treatment of periodontal conditions.
- Surgical procedures.
- Replacement of missing teeth essential to personal appearance, the performance of military duty, or the proper mastication of food.

EMERGENCY DENTAL CARE.—This is treatment necessary to relieve pain, control bleeding, and manage acute septic conditions or injuries to the oral-facial structures. Emergency dental care is authorized worldwide for personnel of all categories.

ELECTIVE DENTAL CARE.—This type of care a dentist may authorize but may also defer. Each case should be evaluated individually based on Navy policy. Examples of elective dental are malocclusion, orthodontics, replacing amalgam fillings with gold crowns, etc.

Question by Jes: Am I to old to join the navy to become a corpsman? I am 26 years old.?
I have been giving it a lot of thought, and I have talked to a recruiter but I would like some information from a person who actual was or still is a corpsman. Any information is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Best answer:

Answer by jeeper_peeper321
Nope, why would you think you are to old ?

You will be working in a hospital, or clinic along with doctors and nurses.

Plus the Navy has some great commissioning programs, if you wanted to stay in medicine and become a Nurse.

It might be different if you were male and wanted to go green side.

But even then, a 26 yr old is still young enough to keep up.

Question by : I am torn, should I join the navy, army, or air force?
If I joined navy or army, I would want to be a chaplain assistant. If I did air force I would do pararescue. (the reason no marines, I was in the DEP, but I was more interested in support)

Best answer:

Answer by jomskylark
Pararescue vs. chaplain assistant? That’s what you’re thinking about? Weird, but okay.

Pararescue will be a highly demanding and difficult job. You will have to train extensively. There is a massive drop out rate (Wikipedia says 90% fail).

I don’t know much about a chaplain assistant, but I guarantee it will not be as difficult to get into as pararescue.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is this: If you want pararescue, you will have to be damn sure, and work your ass off to get it done.

What do you think? Answer below!
