Question by melody: would you do dental hygienist or what do you suggest?
I am a 40 years old female which has done dental school out of US,and I am resident of florida…I just applied for dental hygienist program however, I hear that it is more likely that I won’t find a job and if any it would be without benefits.Considering that I am married with two kids I don’t want to do something that I cant find a job.I am also diabetic so I am afraid of going for nursing because I know that is stressful and needs a healthy body. Please give me your thoughts or suggestions.Thanks.

Answer by David
There are dental hygiene jobs out there. Maybe the economy is a little tight right now but just a few years ago, dentists were fighting over hiring hygienists. When times get better, you’ll find a lot of opportunities. If you decide to work full time at a particular dental office, you will probably get benefits. Many dental hygienists work part time so that they can be at home with the kids in the afternoon. Others decide that they like to work a few dental offices rather than just one. They can’t expect benefits if they are only part-time at these practices. I have 4 dental hygienists who chose to work part time for various reasons, so I don’t pay benefits. However, I pay them over $ 50/hour (in San Francisco), so if that’s a good salary, you might want to consider hygiene as a career.

Question by : Can a dental hygienist obtain a orthodontic certificate or something that would further a career in ortho?
I have heard that hygienists that do a lot of ortho can obtain a certificate other then the diploma from college. Anyone know of this information?

Best answer:

Answer by Educated
No. First of all you need to learn all about whatever career path you want to get into because hygienists do NOT work in an orthodontic office. Dental assistants or “orthodontic” assistants are the people who work with an orthodontist in a orthodontic practice. You can train to be a dental assistant by going to a training school or a community college that offers dental ASSISTING. And you will earn a certificate in 1 year and can work in any dental practice as a dental assistant.
Or you can apply to any orthodontic office that is hiring a dental/orthodontic assistant and is “willing to train the right person”. You can later get certified while working.

A dental HYGIENIST is a college degree program. It is highly competitive to get into a DH program, just like RN program. You must take all the same core classes that RN students need to take to even be allowed to apply to a DH program. You must attend a college that is offering an AS or BS degree program specifically in Dental Hygiene. Then after graduation you must take state and national written and clinical exams. You can then apply for a state license and become a RDH in a state and then work in dental offices, but not an orthodontic office because orthodontists don’t need RDHs. They need Dental Assistants only in an orthodontic practice.

Please read the US government “job outlook handbook” for more explanations about any career you are looking into.

DAs make 12-18 dollars an hour, on average (more if you are certified DA)
RDHs make 30-40 an hour on average. Just like an RN.

Question by <3: What would you ask a dental assistant?
I’m interested in becoming a dental assistant and the people at my dentist are asking for me to come in and talk to them. They are also letting me observe what they do for a week which is awesome! The only thing is I’m not sure what questions to ask. Have any ideas? I probably shouldn’t ask how much they get paid or if they like their job because that would kind of be putting them on the spot don’t you think? Thanks for the help! :)

Question by pookiemct07: Somebody with tact and social graces – would you please help me out?
My 7-year-old has this gift for making loud, rude (but painfully accurate) observations about people. For example, today he asked his dental hygeinist why she had a big pimple on her face. Well, it was a mole, but that’s beside the point. I’m not asking what to do about him – that’s obvious. What I’m wanting to know is what, if anything, to say to the offended person and to him that will quickly diffuse the situation with the least amount of attention attracted and the least amount of embarrassment to the person he’s just insulted. I mean, I can’t very well say, “Oh, you’re not fat!” to a 400 lb. person or tell a guy with a huge wart on his nose that it’s hardly noticeable. That’s being patronizing and would cause further embarrassment. I mean, not to defend him, but he’s not making things up here – I just can’t seem to get him to understand that these comments are socially unacceptable. We’re working on that. If I apologize to the person, then I feel like I’m saying that I’m sorry my child noticed their big nose or their crooked teeth or what have you. That’s not really an apology. That’s like saying, “While it’s true that you have horrible breath, I’m sorry my child pointed it out to you in front of people.” So basically, I need damage control here. How do I stop him in mid-sentence? How do I let the person who he offended know that I’m really sorry without making it even more embarrassing for them? Do I just look at them with an apologetic smile, shake my head, roll my eyes and change the subject? Of course, with him, if I don’t explain why a person looks different, he’ll just ask again – even louder. Help!!!!!!!!!
Since someone brought up the subject of Asperger’s, I think I should mention that he’s been tested for that, along with ADHD, depression, anxiety and so on down the line. He’s seen his pediatrician, psychiatrist and psychologist. We’ve gone through parental coaching. I’ve read book upon book. We’ve done the time-outs, the active listening, the behavior charts… I don’t want to sound defensive, but we’ve been through the wringer on this and all we’ve gotten so far from all the testing is the vague diagnoses that he’s got a “type of oppositional disorder”. He overreacts to things and flies into a rage when he doesn’t get his way. He can also say very hateful things to people when he’s angry or embarrassed. I guess I really didn’t mention any of that. This is why talking to him, while I do it anyway, doesn’t produce the results it would on a “normal” child. Maybe really all I need are your prayers…..

Question by talbottgirls: Parents, what would you do about this problem…is there cause for concern?
My oldest daughter is 6. She lost her first 2 teeth (the 2 bottom middle) when she was 5 and they came back fine. Well, since then she has lost one on each side of the bottom middle, her 2 front teeth, the ones on each side and one more at the top (this is 7 teeth) and none of them have returned.
At her last dentist appointment I asked the hygeinist (the dentist has never once come out to talk with me) about them-this was in Jan. She said they were fine and should come in any day. She has lost more since then…I would like to have x-rays to see if there is a problem. I am really concidering going to another dentist. There are several foods (i.e. apples, chicken) that she hasn’t been able to eat since the summer…and she is really starting to get embarrased. Like today is Spring Picture day and she was trying to practice smiling without the missing teeth showing. Please give your opinion…also please no jokes.

Best answer:

Answer by jess
If they have never done x-rays then I would definatelly go to a different dentist. If they did xrays, but it was a long time ago I would probably request a new set but you would more then likely have to pay for them since the insurance company pays for x-rays every 5 yrs or so.

Actually, now reading your question again, you said the dentist doesnt talk to you…so I would say Yes, go to a different dentist.

Question by Kelly: How much more schooling would I need to be a dental hygenist? ?
I’m currently going to school to be a dental assistant. Obviously the pay isn’t that great but dental hygiene has a much better pay. If I already have completed the dental assisting courses how much more schooling would I need on top of the 1 I have left?

Best answer:

Answer by Scolio
In the US it will usually take you two years once you’re in the program. before you get accepted you need to complete some classes, usually about 7-8 depending on the school. To take the prerequisites it will usually take you about 1.5yrs, so the whole dental hygiene education will take you about 3-3.5 yrs. Schools dont care that you were an assistant before, it will not cause you to finish sooner than others. Dental assisting and dental hygiene is completely different. Make sure you really want to be a hygienist, if you are doing it strictly for money you will not last. Also, job market is really slow, it’s much easier to find a dental assisting job than dental hygiene
